- Abstract
The beginnings of Slovakian Professional theatre are closely tied to Czech theatre and culture. Following the creation of Czechoslovakia (1918), the concept of a Slovakian national theatrical scene did not come about as a consequence of animpulse from Slovakians themselves, but rather as a result of a political decision. The Slovak national theatre was from itsinception (1920) a Czech theatre by nature, much like the Eastern Slovak national theatre (since 1924) in Košice. The correlations of the Slovakian and Czech theatrical arts had a multifaceted and intense form, also extending intoo ther artistic fields. They were also realised in the theatre through dramaturgy. Czech directors and actors naturally preferred Czech plays, which in the third decade of the last century in turn a ided the development of Slovakian theatre. The role of Czech drama in the repertoire of Košice's theatre in the interwar periodisthe subject of this study.
