- Abstract
The University of Southern California Sea Grant program has been working with the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the ninth largest port complex in the world, to address environmental and economic challenges. The program has collaborated with government agencies and diverse partners to reduce diesel pollution and improve air quality in the area. They have also facilitated conversations about cleaner fuel alternatives and implemented a voluntary ship speed reduction program to protect whales and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the program has repurposed a dockside space into an educational facility called AltaSea, which serves as a marine research facility and provides environmental education opportunities. The program sees the Los Angeles region as a model for other metropolitan areas and believes that science can benefit people, the environment, and the economy simultaneously.
