- Abstract
The article is a review of "The Sage handbook of decision making, assessment and risk in social work." The handbook explores the complex issue of working with risk in social work, aiming to strike a balance between risk-aversion and an overemphasis on risk. The book is structured around four themes: professional judgement, assessment, risk and decision processes, assessment tools and approaches, and developing and managing practice. The review highlights the value of Pacific and Indigenous social work approaches, emphasizing the importance of collective decision-making and cultural humility. It also discusses the implications of algorithmic risk prediction tools in child protection and the need for social workers to be brave in their assessment and decision-making.
