- Abstract
The article discusses a cluster randomized trial that evaluated the efficacy of vitamin A or beta carotene supplementation in reducing mortality related to pregnancy as well as infant mortality in rural northern Bangladesh from 2001 and 2007. The trial involved pregnant women who were randomly assigned to receive retinyl palmitate, all-trans beta carotene or placebo. Those who received vitamin A and beta carotene showed no significant difference from those who took placebo in terms of mortality outcomes. The rates of stillbirth and infant mortality in the placebo, vitamin A and beta carotene groups were 47.9 and 45.6, 51.8 and 68.1 and 65.0 and 69.8, respectively. Vitamin A supplementation was found to have reduced gestational night blindness.
