- Abstract
The article presents an overview of problems that are located within the policies of professional medical associations that lead to a failure to manage both real and perceived conflicts of interest which can result from the associations' relationships with physicians and the pharmaceutical industry. A discussion of conflicts of interest that affect the activities, leadership and members of professional medical associations is presented. Short and long term guidelines which have been suggested to prevent the appearance of undue influence related to conflicts of interest are discussed.
