- Abstract
Matters of post‐transitional development in the Russian Federation are closely associated with inequalities both within and across its regions. This paper aims to assess the variance in the volume of production at the municipal level and find out how it depends on municipal‐level determinants and polycentric regional structure. Our study uses data from 2,271 municipalities including 19,612 urban and rural settlements in 2019. Hierarchical models distinguished intraregional and interregional effects and showed that investment and polycentricity positively affect production volume. Our findings improve our understanding of variance in the economic performance of municipalities.
