- Abstract
The early recollections (ERs) of 56 graduate students were analyzed with the Early Recollection Rating Scale-Revised to determine whether students who scored higher on anxiety also scored high on ER themes of withdrawal, passivity, rejection, inferiority, and perceiving life as threatening. ER themes and anxiety were compared during high-stress (attending classes) and low-stress (classes not in session) times of the academic year. This study's results uphold previous Adlerian and non-Adlerian theory and research that people with anxiety perceive danger in the world and in others, and also feel a lack of belonging that leads to withdrawal, avoidance, and freezing or passivity. Analysis of ER themes demonstrated similarities to Adler's description of safeguarding.
