- Abstract
The article presents fossil evidence of the existence of greater fishing bat Noctilio leporinus on Isala de Mona in Puerto Rico and reasons behind its extinction. A bone specimen consisting of a complete radius that was excavated by geologist Clifford A. Kaye from Cueva Negra located on the western side of Isla de Mona near Playa Sardinera affirms that the species once existed on the island. Among the factors contributing to the extinction of fishing bats are the human occupation of caves rendering roosting sites uninhabitable through light, smoke, noise and other perturbations, or direct hunting by humans for food.
