- Abstract
The article offers historical information on the steamboat Bertrand and discusses an exhibit about it at DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge in Missouri Valley, Iowa. After striking a submerged log 20 miles north of Omaha, Nebraska, on April 1, 1865 the riverboat sank into the river and settled to the muddy bottom. Required to relinquish artifacts located on government property, the salvagers surrendered the steamboat's cargo to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to be preserved in an exhibit at the refuge.
