The Electoral Fortunes of Ecuador's Pachakutik Party: The Fracaso of the 2006 Presidential Elections.
- Authors
Mijeski, Kenneth J.; Beck, Scott H.
- Abstract
The article explains the electoral failure of the Pachakutik political movement through an analysis of the official 2006 election results, an examination of various post-election analyses by Ecuadorians and the role played by Pachakutik within the larger context of Ecuador's indigenous social movement. The consequence of the rapid and bitter split between the administration of Lucio Gutiérrez and CONAIE/Pachakutik had serious consequences for an indigenous movement that appeared to be at the pinnacle of its influence in national policy-making. An increasing level of criticism was directed toward Pachakutik leadership during 2005 and 2006, from within and without, that characterized the political organization as "indigenista" and moving away from the principles of inclusiveness.
