- Authors
DeAngelo, Darcie; Douglas, Lee
- Abstract
This article explores the impact of recent changes in academic publishing on image-driven scholarship in visual anthropology. The authors express disappointment at the standardized visual format enforced by the publisher of the AAA journal portfolio, which limits experimentation with the relationship between image and text. They also raise ethical concerns about the downloadable nature of images and media published by Wiley, as it compromises control over their circulation and use. The article highlights alternative publishing initiatives, such as CoMMPCT and the Society for Visual Anthropology, that prioritize dialogue, creativity, and collaboration. The VAR issue 39.2 features a special section on the anthropology of the artificial and includes research articles and critiques of image-driven scholarship and exhibitions. The article emphasizes the importance of image ethics and the need for more inclusive and less precarious publishing futures.
