- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the ideas of fourth year students about school guidance practices at psychological counseling and guidance department in Çukurova University. Qualitative data were collected from 29 female and 13 male students by asking them to write their thoughts on school guidance practices in the following topics: schools of practices and school counsellor; supervisor of guidance practices course and the course itself; the role of these school practices on their professional development. Data were analyzed by content analysis. Results showed that the feasibility of physical properties of school, the support and help of principals, teachers and school counselor and their effort in creating an appropriate environment for practices had an enormous effect on conducting practices effectively. Students found school practices course very useful and effective especially for applying theoretical knowledge into practice, enhancing their problem solving skills, benefiting from their peers’ feedback and developing their skills for school guidance practices. Students also paid attention to the motivating and developing effects of supervisor feedback, being observed by supervisor, creating an atmosphere for expressing themselves in a comfortable way. In terms of personal and professional development students mentioned some of changes as enhancing psychological and practical skills, becoming aware of skills needed to be developed, increasing the feelings of happiness, confidence, relax/ comfortable, efficacy.
