- Abstract
Dance is mainly considered a femenine activity, thus limiting its practice to men. (Risner, 2007). Nowadays, due to specific social movements (Curtis, 2015), this situation seems to be improved and there are more men practicing dance. Nevertheless, there are still prejudices and difficulties to become professional male dancers. For this reason, the aims of this study were to analyse life experiences related with dance of professional male dancers in order to elucidate possible obstacles to become a professional dancer in our society and also to explore the possible benefits. 10 professional male dancers from Spain (age: 38,4 ± 7,82 SD) participated in this study. A semi-structured interview was carried out following four topics related with: a) before dancing; b) starting point to dance; c) social environment; and d) experiences as professionals. For analysing the data, the software Atlas.ti was used. Participants seemed to be satisfied with their job as professional dancers. Most of them live dance as a moment to connect with themselves and feel the flow. All participants expressed happiness and freedom and considered dance as a tool to develope a good body awareness.
