- Abstract
This study aimed to research the influence of parental education over University course prestige chosen by their children. Participated in this study 1555 college students, from 1st and 2nd grade, 966 women (62.1%), between 16 and 45 years (M = 20.0; SD = 3.34), all of them from an university in southern of Brazil. The measure used was a sociodemographic form, prepared by the team which conducts socio-economic assessments on the same university and a prestigious indicator of each course. A one-factor ANOVA was conducted. Results pointed to a significant relation between parent's education on the prestige course chosen by children. Post-hoc tests revealed that individuals who have parents with higher education choose more prestigious courses than those who have parents with basic education. Individuals which their mothers have higher education choose the most prestigious courses compared to those who have mothers illiterate, or with primary or secondary education. These data reinforce the importance of career interventions within the youth to help them consider their potential and demystify possible stereotypical beliefs that contribute to choices that perpetuate social inequalities.
