- Abstract
We have no information on the earliest history of the Standing Saint Anthony by Andrea da Murano in the church of San Giovanni, Camposampiero (Padua). We do not know who commissioned the painting, painted on a table traditionally considered the last 'bed' on which the Saint rested. However, the historical inquiry on the social environment related to the church of San Giovanni and the charitable initiatives undertaken by individuals or organized groups leads us to believe that Andrea da Murano was commissioned to paint the table not by a single family, although important, nor by the Franciscan Third Order which does not seem to have had, at that time, sufficient financial resources to support the initiative. Instead, as this paper suggests, the painting was most likely commissioned and paid for by the Confraternity of the Saint. Indeed, as a thorough study of archival documents proves, the brotherhood was particularly involved in financing the decoration of the church throughout the centuries.
