- Abstract
This article reviews the influence of rape myths - defined as stereotypical attitudes toward rape - on juridical relevant outcome variables such as likelihood to report a rape as well as the processing of information and decision making in rape cases. Following the presentation of consequences and functions of rape myths, the author presents the results of a meta-analysis on the relationship between rape myth acceptance and subjective judgments about rape cases. The results of the meta-analysis show a clear relationship between rape myth acceptance and the dependent variables studied. It was found that stereotypical attitudes regarding rape showed a particularly strong link to blame attributed to the victim, whereas the links of rape myth acceptance to blame attributed to the perpetrator and to decisions of a more legal nature (such as verdict, sentence length) were less pronounced, but still substantial.
