- Abstract
The International People's Tribunal (IPT) recently found the governments of past president Rodrigo Duterte, current president Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and the United States of America guilty of massive violations of international humanitarian law in the Philippines. The IPT, a quasi-judicial mechanism, heard testimony from 15 witnesses detailing human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings, torture, enforced disappearances, and indiscriminate aerial bombing. The tribunal concluded that the Philippine government acted with impunity and disregard for international humanitarian law. The verdict has been delivered to those on trial and international bodies, calling for future actions by organizations such as the International Criminal Court. The United States' support for the Philippine military has enabled these abuses to persist.
