Kundera and the Nobel Prize.

- Abstract
Milan Kundera, a Czech-French writer, was rumored to have been deserving of the Nobel Prize before his death. However, his relationship with Czech dissidents, particularly Václav Havel, caused tension and ultimately led to him being excluded from consideration for the prize. Kundera's decision to publish his second novel with a French publisher instead of the Czech dissidents' press, as well as his playful and fictionalized statements about his life in interviews, further alienated the dissidents. As a result, when Kundera was nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1984, the dissidents proposed their own candidate, Jaroslav Seifert, who ultimately won the prize. This missed opportunity for the dissidents to gain international recognition is why Kundera did not receive the Nobel Prize.
