- Abstract
The article presents a discussion on the future and challenges of sports management as an emerging academic discipline. It discusses the ideas that deal with three areas: curriculum, or knowledge structures; its links with other areas; and, further research. The issue of curriculum or knowledge structures concerns the type of information that is provided to students in the sport management programs. So, if sport management is to grow as a legitimate field of study, it will need to develop its own knowledge structures. That is, a body of knowledge must be developed, which should be sufficiently substantial and unique to merit recognition by other academic disciplines. Also, these knowledge structures must be of a higher order than practical how-to knowledge and they must have a theoretical foundation. This would eliminate the problem of knowledge shortage that occur during creation and recreation of programs of study. For example, more frequently courses in sport management offer only a cursory and uncritical introduction to topics that are the object of prolonged and critical analysis.
