- Abstract
Background: Prevalence of hyperchromic melanosis of the face has not been determined in Mexico. Literature available refers to isolated epidemiologic data. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of hyperchromic melanoses of the face, to know their frequency according to the age and gender and to inform about the histologic diagnosis in 80 patients with hyperchromic melanosis of the face. Patients and method: A prevalence study of hyperchromic melanosis of the face was conducted in 325 patients that received attention in our Dermatology Department at Hospital General de México and in the clinical exam presented one or more hyperchromic melanotic maculae of the face. Results: 243 (75%) of 325 patients were female. The mean age was 40.2 ± 9.8 years ranging from 25 to 73. Postinflammatory pigmentation was diagnosed in 98 (29%) of our patients, followed by melasma in 83 (25%). Most patients referred that their hyperchromic melanosis of the face had been present for an average of 33.5 ± 15.3 years. 45% (146 patients) initiated their dyschromia before the age of 25 years. All of our patients referred familiar antecedents of hyperchromic melanosis of the face and 5% (16 patients) said that a relative had the same dermatosis. Histological exam confirmed the clinical findings. Conclusions: Facial melanosis are common in our population, we want to call the attention to their presentation, specially due to the great polymorphism they can have, fact that influences directly on diagnosis.
