- Abstract
The article presents a survey which examines the Roman mosaics depicting the behavior of the groupers. It notes that the mosaics shows that groupers were so large as to be pictured as sea monsters and their habitat use and depth distribution have changed in historical periods. It points that the ancient art demonstrates a connection between prehistoric and modern evidence which indicates that shallow nearshore Mediterranean ecosystems have lost the dusky groupers and their ecological roles.
