- Abstract
The article discusses the characteristics of the marine toxin, Pfiesteria piscicida, associated with major fish kills in the U.S. Pfiesteria is a photosynthetic dinoflagellate and a copper-containing exotoxin. The toxins decompose rapidly and generate short-lived, highly reactive free radicals that impaired many biologically important functions. Studies on how Pfiesteria killed fish were argued wherein other researchers stressed that the organism physically attacked fish and ate their tissues. While others debated that a physical attack and a toxin were the reasons.
