- Abstract
The article discusses the career of German typeface designer Hermann Zapf. His early work in metal type at the German foundries Stempel and Linotype is discussed, including two of his most famous designs, Palatino and Optima. Also discussed is his move in the 1960s into transitional typesetting technologies such as photographic and digital composition, and finally his work in computer typography. Problems with unauthorized copying of Zapf's designs are also discussed, as is his work for International Typeface Corporation (ITC) and his teaching work in the United States. Other Zapf fonts discussed include Gilgengart, Melior, Marconi, Zapf Chancery, and Zapfino, among others.
