- Title
Telling It Slant: Promethean, Whig, and Dissenting Politics in Elizabeth Barrett's Poetry of the 1830s.
- Authors
Avery, Simon
- Abstract
The article offers poetry criticism of several works by Elizabeth Barrett Browning produced in the 1830s and collected in the books "Prometheus Bound, and Miscellaneous Poems" and "The Seraphim, and Other Poems." It explores the political influences in Browning's family life and suggests that her mature works exhibit direct and aggressive commentary on the socio-political issues of the period. Poems discussed include "The Tempest," "A Sea-Side Meditation," and "The Island."
