- Title
Shades of Gray: A Diachronic Reading of Thomas Hardy's "Neutral Tones".
- Authors
Senior, Claire
- Abstract
The article notes that Thomas Hardy was one of the first writers to benefit from the knowledge of philology that was becoming current in England in the 1860s, as seen in his poem "Neutral Tones." The article argues that Hardy plays with words to make a poem that is on the surface an elegy for love lost into an exploration of the way language and communication shape and manipulate.
