- Title
Absolving the State: The Trafficking--Slavery Metaphor.
- Authors
Davidson, Julia O'Connell
- Abstract
The author offers opinions on human trafficking. It is stated that the metaphor of comparing human trafficking to slavery used by governments and social activists to condemn the practice is counterproductive to the goal of eliminating the practice. The comparison is seen to be overly broad, ignoring differences in the situation of victims of human trafficking and actual slaves. This in turn is said to allow governments to ignore the broader issues of poverty and economic inequality which generate the large numbers of illegal immigrants who are the primary victims of human trafficking.
