- Abstract
Mankind has recorded its history in many ways. Few historical researchers would ignore the value of personal correspondence. Journals, newspapers, or the records of political debates as source materials. Any object that is passed from one time period to the next, regardless of its nature, acquires a modicum of historical significance. The historical value of novels has recently been explored and accepted. So too, poetry may serve as a viable indicator of the past. Incidents, thoughts, and values of a particular time period may be evidenced in verse as well as within more traditional historical sources. According to Commager, imagination in history can be cultivated and enriched by poetry. As an historical source, poetry contains an inherent value that may complement and supplement the existing framework prevalent in historical research.
