- Authors
LeCompte, Mary Lou
- Abstract
This article discusses the history of the sport of rodeo. The requirements of rodeo, as established by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, are presented. The establishment of rodeo's popularity by W.F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody is also highlighted, through Cody's "Wild West" outdoor shows that toured across the United States and Europe between 1883 and 1916. From these shows came the birth of modern rodeo, led by western heritage festivals that featured many rodeo events. The differences between indoor and outdoor rodeos is also discussed, as well as a discussion on the state of modern rodeo.
