- Abstract
This article focuses on the integration of people with developmental disabilities into the workforce in the United States. During the past 26 years, Macomb-Oakland Regional Center Inc. in Clinton Township, Michigan, has offered expertise, including supported employment, to people with DDs. Since its founding in 1972, it has placed more than 2,800 people with DDs in area organizations, as an alternative to nursing homes and institutions, making it the largest and the most innovative, community-based agency in its field. In the United States, there are 44 million people with disabilities; about 10 million of them have DDs. Studies conducted by the Michigan Department of Community Health showed that, during the first quarter of fiscal year 1995-1996, 4,906 people were employed through supported-employment programs. One of the most progressive companies to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 is Marriott International Inc. Marriott's business spans the entire United States and 27 countries.
