The article discusses the relationship between sport, science and national identity during the 19th century, including through referencing the American long-distance pedestrian Edward Payson Weston's participation in the 1876 Royal Agricultural Hall race in Islington, London, England. The role the physical education played in the development of national human bodies is discussed.
