Primitive law is studied by anthropologists and jurists with an interest in tribal societies. The method of analytical jurisprudence is largely inapplicable to primitive law, which is studied by the historical and the comparative method. Anthropologists and jurists are divided over the exact nature of law, and its distinction from custom. Therefore a minimum definition of law is accepted that makes the study of primitive law possible.
