- Title
Mucosal immunology: Inflammasomes induce sepsis following community breakdown.
- Authors
Bordon, Yvonne
- Abstract
The article discusses research entitled "Lethal inflammasome activation by a multidrug-resistant pathobiont upon antibiotic disruption of the microbiota," by J. S. Ayres and colleagues. The study identifies a pathobiont that is increased in number in the intestines of antibiotic-treated mice and can trigger a fatal sepsis-like disease by activating the NAIP5 inflammasome. It suggests that inflammasome may be a useful therapeutic target in patients harbouring antibiotic-resistant pathobionts.
