- Abstract
In the frame of a larger research on predictors of success in trainig of Argentinian military cadets, two studies are introduced. The first one analyzes six cohorts of graduates from a military educative institution (1997-2003), taking into account the variability in the achievement exhibited during their higher education, relating it to demographics variables (parental education and occupation and the status of being a militarys relative). Results show academic averages are descending in a period of six years. Military achievement shows less variability, while both academic and military achievement seem to be associated to parental education. The second study analyzes the freshmen cohort 2003, including biographic data, values, personality factors and motivation as predictors. Five of the considered categories discriminated between both groups of cadets with high and low achievement: they are cognitive factors related to previous achievement, vocational guidance and certain leadership features. In the other hand, cadets who obtained lowest averages in their first year, exhibited more extrinsic motivation, less intrinsic motivation, and power was their hegemonic value.
