- Abstract
The author discusses her literary encounter with callaloo and her finding that Haitian callaloo was in fact okra/gombo, and the "real" callaloo was called zepina or spinach in Haiti. She recalls reference to the dish in a lullaby created by her grandfather Théophile Salnave, a local radio broadcaster in the mid-1930s. References to callaloo also appeared in Emile Roumer's poem "Marabout de mon coeur" and Jacques Stéphen Alexis' novel "Compère Général Soleil."
