- Abstract
The article tackles the concept of sickness unto death that details Kierkegaardian despair and hope in Akira Kurosawa's film "Ikiru" and the novel "The Death of Ivan Ilych" by Leo Tolstoy and a contemporary approach to adaptation. Topics discussed include differences between literary and cinematic expression, autobiographical link between author and main character, spiritual reality that supersedes the superficiality of social expression, and process of becoming a self that diminishes despair.
