- Abstract
This article brings reflections on Brazilian cities from a gender perspective by demonstrating that public spaces materialize as architectures of abandonment because it does not welcome the female public, children, in short, all who are not heterosexual men. Our research for this text was qualitative and bibliographic. Important authors for this paper are: Barbosa (1995), Butler (2020), Santos (1996), Harvey (2000), Gehl (2015), Freitag (2006), Maricato (2013), Kern (2021), among others. As a result, we understand Brazilian cities as eminently masculine constructs, since those who design cities are, historically and mostly, men. Such planning leaves aside basic female needs, such as public bathrooms, changing tables for babies, accessible sidewalks for baby strollers, among other urban conditions and spaces mostly for female use. We see the need to adapt public spaces to welcome people and reduce inequalities in access to these spaces.
