- Abstract
This paper investigates the factors that affect Filipino tourism and hospitality management (THM) students' willingness to work overseas, particularly in another Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) country. The influence of THM students' current financial satisfaction and optimism towards getting employment in the Philippines and in ASEAN countries on their willingness to work in another ASEAN country were examined. Through an online survey, data were collected from a quota sample of 281 THM students enrolled in a private university in the Philippines, and were analysed using logistic regression. Findings show that only the students' optimism towards getting employment in the Philippines has an effect on their willingness to work in another ASEAN country. Specifically, as students' optimism in their home country increases, their willingness to work abroad decreases. This paper provides implications for the academia and policy makers in the Philippine tourism and hospitality industry.
