- Title
"He, Cromwell ...": Pronouns in Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall.
- Authors
Richard, HODSON
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the book "Wolf Hall" by Hilary Mantel is presented. Topics include use of ultra-close third person narration, with the pronoun "he" referring to the main character, Thomas Cromwell; an analysis of use of "he" in chapters related to topics like Occult History of Britain, 1521-1529; portrayal of king Henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey; ambiguities resulting from default use of "he" to represent Cromwell; and use of clarifiers on few occasions when ambiguity might be possible.
