- Authors
WITTE, ANN D.
- Abstract
The article features the success of the work release program for inmates in North Carolina in reducing crime. Under the program, over 1,400 prison inmates in the state are permitted to leave their cells in order to work regular jobs in private businesses where they earn work experience and income. It examines the benefits of the program to the government which include financial benefits and reduction in the seriousness of criminal recidivism. It concludes that the program contributes to the improvement of the performance of former inmates following release.
