- Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyse in detail both the intertextual reference points of El castigo sin venganza by Lope de Vega and the dialogue the tragedy maintains with them. This dialogue is based on the following oblique allusion stated by Lope in the prologue to the reader in the 1634 quarto or suelta edition: «its story was written in Latin, French, German, Tuscan and Castilian». Thus, this study reviews the debt the text contracts with its main intertexts, the novella I 44 by Matteo Bandello, as well as its indirect translation into Spanish, and the myth of Phedra. As a novelty, the possible presence of the medieval Celtic legend of Tristan and Isolde is proposed on account of a detailed structural comparison between Lope de Vega's tragedy and the schema of the Celtic legend.
