- Abstract
The paper deals with the female characters in the Russian playwright Leonid Andreev's type of plays, the new play. Being a rather prolific writer of the Russian Silver Era, Andreev left a mark in the world's works of drama both as an author and as a theorist. The New Play was his most significant contribution to the development of the already existing dramatic forms, as well as The Theatre of the Pan-psyche. Therefore, the study of his female characters, of their development, and also the themes and ideas that appear within the dynamics of these characters, represent a contribution to the genealogy of the whole Andreev's oeuvre. The topics of gender, of the power and weakness of human thought and rational principle, of the opposition to God and his creation, are highly important; they appear for the first time in the New Play, and are later developed and used in his other works. These topics will be examined in the following plays: A Man's Life, Anathema, Black Masks, The Ocean.
