- Title
Latin revived: Source-based vocabulary lessons courtesy of Harry Potter.
- Abstract
The article focuses on how the popularity of the Harry Potter series, by J. K. Rowling, has allowed teachers to interest students in the roots of words. According to the article, part of Rowling's international success is due to her use of Latin-based words. Teachers can use these words as a springboard for study of other English words based on the same roots. The authors argue that making connections between Latin origins and modern English words is important to building vocabulary. The article presents several examples of student assignments related to roots of words.
