- Title
Reply to Carroll: The Artistic Value of a Particular Kind of Moral Flaw.
- Authors
EATON, A.W.
- Abstract
The author responds to an article by philosopher Noël Carroll in which Carroll challenges the author's theory of "robust immoralism," the claim that sometimes an intrinsic ethical defect in an artwork can be aesthetically meritorious. The author suggests that by so forcefully arguing against robust immoralism, Carroll has robbed his own theory of "moderate moralism," which claims that in some cases a moral defect in an artwork counts as an aesthetic defect, of much of its complexity and nuance. The author employs the example of the character of Tony Soprano on the television show "The Sopranos" to further her arguments against Carroll.
