- Abstract
Labeo rohita juveniles were fed diets supplemented with vitamin E and tryptophan for 60 days, then exposed to a sub-lethal concentration of nitritenitrogen (2.0 mg/l) for 45 days with the same feeding regime. After 45 days of exposure, the nitrite was withdrawn and the fish were fed their respective diets for an additional 60 days. After this period, the fish were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila to study the degree of immunosuppression caused by the exposure to nitrite and the efficacy of vitamin E and tryptophan in improving health and survival of the fish. Non-specific resistance factors including nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT), lysozyme activity, and white blood counts were enhanced in fish fed the diets containing high levels of vitamin E and tryptophan compared to fish fed the control diet. Further, survival of the nitrite induced immunocompromised L. rohita was improved by feeding elevated amounts of vitamin E and tryptophan.
