- Abstract
For babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, prolonged separation from a parent constitutes a significant developmental stressor (Paris et al., 2010). Given young children's need for secure and continuous attachment relationships with their caregivers, when one parent deploys to a warzone, the role of the homefront parent becomes even more critical in the healthy adjustment and development of children. In this article, we detail the transitions and adaptations experienced by non-deploying parents, typically mothers, through cycles of deployment separation and reunion, and emphasize the importance of supporting these caregivers to ensure child and family well-being. Our insights are based on a decade of work with military families with young children who have experienced parental deployment. Incorporating the voices of home-front mothers we interviewed, we hope to bring to light some of the joys, challenges, and resilience of these parents.
