- Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the nature of the media coverage of energy issues in Saudi newspapers during Nov 2019 to Oct 2020. This research used content analysis to analyse 388 news stories published in Saudi newspapers. The overall data found that the following news values ‘Good news’, ‘Follow up’, and ‘The power elite’ dominated the media coverage with 53%, 42.3%, and 36,3% respectively, of the total number of news values. Moreover, the results found that nearly one-third of the media coverage was for energy-related investment and projects by 31.2%, followed by disaster-related topics by 23.5%, while the topics of reducing and increasing production, as well as topics related to threats and safety measures, ranked third and fourth, with rates of 15.7%, 14.9%, respectively. Thus, the total percentage of the four most important topics in the media coverage of energy affairs in Saudi newspapers is 85.3% of the total media coverage. In addition, the results of the study showed that more than half of the news stories (57%) relied on one source, while 14.4% of news stories relied on two news sources, and 28.6% relied on more than two news sources. In addition, nearly half of the news stories (48.5%) relied on government sources, while more than one-third of news stories (36.6%) relied on international sources in their media coverage.
