- Abstract
The aim of this article is to examine representations of latino boys in two novels, authored by and centred on American latinos. Particular interest is paid to how the boundaries of idealized masculinities in the novels are pushed or challenged, through the boys’ “skewing” or “bending” of boyhood. Drawing on skevteori (skew or bent theory) and queer phenomenology, I explore how the boundaries of a specific latino boyhood are disturbed, disrupted, and skewed, and how positions of inbetweenness create skewed subjects. Normative boyhoods are challenged in a variety of ways in the novels, and the article pays particular attention to how sexuality is explored and renegotiated in relation to masculinity ideals. The article illustrates how the protagonists’ coming-out processes skew or bend boyhood, and which reactions are visible in the other characters. Finally, the representations of parents and their role in the boys’ self-acceptance and reorientation are analysed, and the article argues that the parental acceptance plays a vital role in the normalisation of the boys’ experience of being skewed or bent.
