- Title
Delivery of breech babies.
- Abstract
This article presents information related to delivery of babies who reach term in the breech position. The risk of long-term disabilities among infants who reach term in the breech position does not differ by the mother's intended mode of delivery, according to a Scottish study. Some 36% of the mothers had elected to have a cesarean delivery because of the baby's position and 64% had chosen to attempt a vaginal delivery. Out of the infants born, 19% had a severe disability or a developmental delay, neurological deficit or psychiatric problem, but neither the overall proportion nor the proportion with each condition varies significantly according to how the mother had intended to deliver. Some of the infants have impairments that are unavoidable regardless of the mode of delivery. Mothers who intend to have a vaginal delivery, have infants with disabilities that might have been attributable to the use of forceps during delivery. Thus a policy of selective planned vaginal delivery is not associated with an increased risk of long term infant morbidity.
