- Abstract
This article presents information on female contraceptives. A total of 377 nonpregnant women were enrolled in the trial. The women were given written instructions on the proper use of the female condom, a log in which to record when they had intercourse, a supply of female condoms and extra lu- bricant; they were also instructed to contact the clinic if their period was overdue or if they had any medical problems. Evaluation of the method's safety was based on the experience of the 359 partic- ipants who returned for at least one follow- up visit. The analysis of the contraceptive efficacy of the female condom included the 328 women who used the method at least once. To assess rates of accidental pregnancy and discontinuation of the female condom, the investigators calculated gross cumulative life-table rates. About 60% of both U. S. and Latin American women used the female con- dom perfectly for at least one month. Six-month life-table pregnancy rates during perfect use were 2.6 pregnancies per 100 among the U.S. women and 9.5 per 100 among the Latin American women.
