- Title
Is the CFO an Enabler or Inhibitor?
- Authors
Hess, Edward D.
- Abstract
The article looks at the relationship between innovation and financial management in business enterprises, as of 2012, focusing on the ability of chief financial officers (CFOs) to either help or hinder innovation. The author defines innovation as a major change relative to a business's previous products or processes. He analyzes the managerial mindset required for innovation and asserts that it differs strongly from that required for high-quality performance of existing practices. He expresses the view that in order to foster innovation, financial executives must let go of or delay imposing traditional financial metrics such as return-on-investment (ROI).
